Gay Christian? YES!

Usually, I get my articles for this blog from ezinearticles.com, but I think I’ve pretty much exhausted that site for a while. So, in my search for articles to post on this blog, I came across the "Gay Christian? YES!" campaign. I encourage every LGBTQ Christian/non-Christian to visit this site. Below is what is said on their FAQ page:

Here are some preliminary answers to a few frequently asked questions related to the “Gay Christian? Yes!” Campaign. Frankly, it’s a work in progress. We invite you to give input or to raise additional question in our Forum, on our Facebook page, or by emailing us at info@GayChristianYes.org.

What is the “Gay Christian? Yes!” Campaign?

The “Gay Christian? Yes!” Campaign is a bold and broad faith-based collaborative movement designed to make it clear that God does not exclude or withhold love because of who we are or how God made us. It is also an opportunity to foster healing, understanding, awareness and an acceptance of everyone and everything God has created.
The Campaign includes a number of components:
        • Billboards and other media proclaiming “Gay Christian? Yes!”
        • A new interactive website offering a constellation of resources that support the message of the Campaign.
        • A coalition of pastors and churches welcoming and affirming lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Christians.
        • Resources that assist churches in becoming more welcoming and affirming.
What is the Campaign’s message?

The first part of the message is that yes, you can be gay and Christian. We proclaim the love of Christ for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people—and those who support them. The Bible’s invitation of new life in Christ extends to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. LGBT people can—and many do—love Jesus and follow Jesus. This is the sincere testimony of those of us leading the Campaign.

The second part of the message is that we affirm the presence of LGBT people in the Christian community. We applaud all the ways that the Christian community is already welcoming and affirming LGBT people, and we invite—we challenge—the Christian community to continue on the journey toward fully embracing LGBT Christians.

Here are some of our more specific goals:
        • We seek to bring together West Michigan’s support for LGBT Christians and allies.
        • We want gay Christians to learn that there are people, places, programs and ministries in place and growing right here in West Michigan, ready to embrace, engage and grow with them.
        • We desire to create a climate for visible and vocal gay Christians and allies to spread the Good News that all are welcome as Christ welcomed all.
        • We work to create a space where parents can openly support their LGBT sons and daughters, where our youth will no longer live in fear and shame, and where our churches are not divided but whole because everyone can fully participate and share the gifts God has given us all.
Why are you launching this Campaign? What are you responding to?

As the name of the Campaign implies, we are responding to the question, “Can a person be gay and Christian?” More pointedly, we are responding to the message that one cannot be both gay and Christian, that the two are incompatible. Sadly—tragically—many Christians and many Christian institutions (such as churches) present such a message. This message of rejection has driven countless gay people toward lives of shame, anguish, fear, hiding and pretending, self-hatred, depression, isolation, and even suicide. It has driven others out of the church and sometimes even away from God.

Fortunately, some gay Christians have been able to embrace the core of the Christian message of good news in Christ, and they have been able to ignore the message that condemns them. Also, many individual Christians and churches are now coming to believe that the Christian community has misinterpreted the Bible as it relates to those who are gay. These Christians now fully embrace gay Christians within the Christian community. The “Gay Christian? Yes!” Campaign is working to encourage this new movement among Christians.

Why are you launching the Campaign during Holy Week and the Easter season?

First, this is the high point of the Christian church year, and so it is especially important to Christians. Regrettably, the Christian community has often told gay people that they are not welcome—and therefore are really not welcome to participate in this most joyful and significant celebration of our faith. So our pain of exclusion is particularly acute during this season. And our need for a message of welcome is thus especially great.

Second, this season centers on the resurrection of Jesus from the dead and its message of new life in Christ. Christ conquered death, and thus we have eternal life. Too often gay people have heard the message that they are literally going to hell unless they become something they are not and cannot become. Once again, Holy Week and Easter is thus an especially appropriate time to proclaim a message of hope—that Christ died and arose from the dead for gay people too!

Third, the message of Jesus’ resurrection life has very practical application for the everyday life of gay people. For too long gay people have heard the message that they should stay in their tombs of shame, fear, and isolation. The message of Easter is that Christ conquered death in all its forms. (Aren’t shame, fear, and isolation forms of death?) God calls us out of all of our tombs—all of our experiences of death—and blesses us with abundant life.

What do you mean by “Christian”?

The coalition leading and supporting the “Gay Christian? Yes!” Campaign includes people from several Christian backgrounds and affiliations, including Baptist, Christian Reformed, Episcopal, Lutheran, Metropolitan Community Church, Presbyterian, Reformed, Roman Catholic, United Methodist, United Church of Christ, and various non-denominational churches. We span the spectrum of the Christian community in terms of our theological beliefs, but this is what we have in common: We love Jesus, follow Jesus, and know that Jesus loves us.

What do you mean by “gay”?

We simply mean those whose romantic and sexual attraction is directed toward persons of the same sex, in distinction from heterosexual people, whose romantic and sexual attraction is directed toward persons of the opposite sex. The vast majority of gay people, like the vast majority of heterosexual people, long to live in a faithful, life-long relationship of covenantal love—what we usually call marriage. Beyond that, gay people vary widely. In fact, our lives vary as much as the lives of our heterosexual neighbors.

We know that when some people hear the word “gay,” they think it refers to certain behaviors or life style choices that are abusive, dangerous, destructive, and antagonistic to God. This is most certainly not what we mean. We know that gay people are just as capable of living respectful, healthy, life-giving, God-honoring lives as heterosexual people. And that is what we are promoting in this Campaign.

What does “transgender” mean?

“Transgender” is an umbrella term used to describe those whose gender identity or gender expression does not match what society expects of their biological sex. This term captures a wide variety of individuals, from cross dressers to transsexuals, as well as those who may identify as no gender or gender queer.

I’m a lesbian—I don’t consider myself gay—but I am a Christian. What about me?

For the purposes of our billboard campaign, “gay” is an umbrella term for those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). This is mostly a practical decision since LGBT is not clear to most people, and spelling it all out would take too much space.

Where does it say in the Bible you can be gay and Christian?

Well, it does not say so explicitly. But we believe that the message of the Campaign is consistent with the Bible’s message. We are all created in God’s image, and God’s invitation to participate in new life in Christ extends to everyone. In John 3:16 we read these words of Jesus: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son so that whoever believes in him may not perish but have eternal life.” The invitation goes out to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. In fact, many gay and transgender people do believe in Jesus and follow Jesus. The simple fact is that there are multitudes of gay Christians!

Aren’t you ignoring the clear teaching of the Bible?

We know, of course, that some people sincerely believe that the Bible condemns same-sex attraction or same-sex unions or both. We too take the Bible very seriously, but we interpret it differently. In summary, we do not believe the Bible condemns—or even mentions—the gay orientation or faithful, loving, covenantal gay unions (or marriages) that we see in our society today.

We invite you to explore this website for resources that explain this approach in greater detail—books, DVD’s, articles, essays, and community events.

This sounds too good to be true. How do I know this isn’t from the devil?

When Jesus taught about distinguishing true teaching from false teaching, he instructed us to consider the fruit: “Every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit” (Matthew 7:17 NIV). Similarly, the Apostle Paul taught us about “the fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22). Those of us leading the Campaign are Christians who have prayerfully walked this path, and we are sharing our understanding of Christ’s message of unconditional love, hope, faith and justice.

As our mission and vision states, we want to proclaim the love of Christ for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people and their allies, and to affirm their presence and inclusion in the Christian community. Why? Because we want to see West Michigan become a region where our vision becomes reality: That every Christian LGBT person may walk freely in the love of Christ. In this Campaign—and those leading it—we see the good fruit, the fruit of the Spirit that Jesus and Paul described.

I’ve heard gay people can change with enough prayer or counseling. Why don’t you promote a message of change rather than acceptance?

If you know of any people who have experienced a genuine change in the direction of their romantic and sexual feelings from same-sex to opposite-sex, please send them our way. We have never met any such people. In fact, the vast majority of research indicates that very few if any people can change their sexual orientation. And efforts to help people change their orientation often do more harm than good, driving people to feelings of failure and depression. (See our Articles section for a link to the website of Hope College Professor David Meyers to learn more about this.)

Of course, people can change their behaviors—and gay some people should, just as some heterosexual people should. So let’s focus on supporting healthy, committed relationships for all people, gay and heterosexual.

Did you say you have churches participating in the Campaign?

Yes. Several pastors and lay members of West Michigan Christian churches have participated in Campaign planning meetings and committees. In addition, 30 churches agreed to be on the list of LGBT-friendly churches on this website. Some of the pastors of these churches have agreed to provide individual pastoral care to LGBT people, including those who are not members of their congregations. And some churches have committed themselves to present a message of hope through sermons, adult education classes, or community programs.

The number of participating churches is growing steadily as church members learn about the Campaign and start nudging their leaders to join the conversation. If your church would like to participate in the Campaign—or if you would like your church to begin the journey toward welcoming gay Christians—please let us know.

What does it mean to be a gay-friendly church?

There is a spectrum of meanings, depending on the church and the denomination, and that is fine because we are all on a faith journey and are starting in different places. For some it means there was a period of study and a vote by the congregation to allow everyone to fully participate in the church. For others it means LGBT people are welcome with limited access, and for others it means talks have begun. To make it clearer for visitors, we distributed a survey to our churches giving them a chance to explain what it means for them to be gay-friendly. We will post the results of those surveys in the “Churches List” of our website as we receive them.

This is too divisive an issue. Why talk about this in church? I’m not gay, so why should I care?

We should care because people are needlessly hurting. We should care because our gay youth need to hear this message of hope repeatedly and from multiple sources. Our families need to know they are not in conflict with God for supporting their LGBT family members. Our churches and congregations need to prayerfully and with open hearts listen for the leading of the Holy Spirit and spread the Good News that all are welcome.

I’m gay, but I’m not a Christian. Why is it just “Gay Christian? Yes!”?

In West Michigan the predominant faith community is Christian and unfortunately, Christians have often been at the forefront of discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. So we are responding to a particular need.

It’s also true that some Christians, including some Christian pastors and churches, are now on the forefront of working for the full affirmation of gay people in church and society. We want to highlight and encourage their efforts.

What is the history behind the “Gay Christian? Yes!” Campaign?

For over 10 years, Gays In Faith Together (GIFT) has been working for the affirmation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people within the faith communities of West Michigan. As the culmination of a 2008 strategic plan, the GIFT board decided to live out the organization’s mission by developing a collaborative “Gay Christian? Yes!” Campaign with a media message, including billboards and a new website with numerous resources.

In 2009 GIFT received a two-year grant (recently renewed) from the Arcus Foundation for the funding of a new part-time staff member to plan and lead the Campaign. Thanks to the Arcus grant, GIFT was able to hire Theresa D. McClellan for the new position of Faith Advocacy Coordinator. Since 2010 Theresa has worked diligently to create a groundswell of support for the Campaign.  She has convened countless meetings of volunteers to lay the foundation of the Campaign.

Now the Campaign is a coalition of gay Christians, friends, family, clergy, church leaders, church members and even some who have been shunned by the church because of who they are. All are working together to spread Christ’s message of hope and love, faith and justice.

This sounds so good and true. How can I help?

Pray for us and our Christ-driven mission for West Michigan. Support the churches and pastors who have opened their doors. Help serve on our committees. Support us financially. We have put our Campaign together with two part-time staff and many dedicated, talented and hard- working volunteers who believe in the message “Gay Christian? Yes!” Join us.

God bless...

GLBT Expo Communion

On March 12, I partook of the body and blood of Christ across from a manually-powered bucking bronco and within earshot of a drag show spectacular.

We created a sanctuary there, at the St. Francis of Assisi Church's booth at the Jacob Javits GLBT Expo on West 34th street in Manhattan, NYC. I'm not Catholic. I didn't know the words to the refrains - or when to kneel or make the sign of the cross. But I know Jesus, and because of that I felt welcome.

I grinned like a court jester the whole time, bouncing around on my tippy toes to read hymn lyrics off the paper of the person standing in front of me. Here we were celebrating the Lenten season, fresh from the contemplative holy day of Ash Wednesday and welcoming the "GLBT Expo Congregation" to take part in the Lord's Supper. I was invited to share the encounter. And sometimes an encounter is all you need.

Lisa Ling said during her OWN Network special, "Pray the Gay Away?" that she'd "fallen in love with Jesus" during the course of her research for the program. We have such an eminently lovable Savior that it took just a little bit of "research," to draw the heart of an accredited journalist. "If I be lifted up, I will draw..." As GLBT individuals we know a little bit about the price of love. We have a thing or two we can teach the church. If only we would all come to the communion table.

At first I didn't realize it was a mass. I just saw a booth for a church with people gathered in front of it and made myself at home. When we all shook hands to pass the peace, I thought the service was over and had nearly walked away when I noticed the bread and wine. We drank from one cup - cold virii be damned (literally!) I grabbed for the chalice (I think I wasn't supposed to do that) because there was so little wine in the bottom of the cup that I automatically responded to the urge to raise and tip the goblet back further. The host was placed in my hands and I savored the moment.

Yes, I am one of the ones that He gave His life for. One reason among an impromptu congregation of reasons. A Pentecostal Holiness child among Catholics, a lesbian among drag queens, a child of God, among children of God. And so I smiled.

LGBT Clergy, Ordained Ministry, Gay Marriage and Me

It's an interesting time for me, a Christian lesbian, and a married New Yorker, to be preparing for my ordination. I have been serving in ministry at The Potter's House Church of the Living God in Brooklyn for many years now - singing, leading praise and worship, playing the organ, directing the choir, maintaining the website and most recently, teaching bible study and preaching. It may sound like a lot, but it doesn't feel that way when you're doing what you love. What I have yet to do is conduct a wedding ceremony. But it looks like that may be a prominent part of my job description since Gay marriage has been legalized in New York at just about the time when my ordination is about to become official.

I grew up in a church where women were rarely allowed to set foot on the pulpit, let alone preach. We wore long skirts, long hair, no makeup, no pants and no open-toed shoes. I had no idea I was a lesbian then. I had no idea I had any kind of sexual identity then because pre-marital sex was a one-way ticket to hell. So as a young girl and a virgin, sex was an ever-lurking evil monster wielding a weapon of unbridled passion capable of corrupting and killing all hope of divine favor with one momentary thrill. So I avoided it like the plague. And I found it quite easy to do so since my latent lesbianism made it fairly easy for me to find men's advances displeasing. Older men wanted to marry me (they thought I was 30 when I was 15 - that's what long skirts and no makeup will do for you). But I was determined to play by the rules. So I waited for that "special man" to arrive for whom I would cook, clean and bear a basketball team worth of kids.

Well, eventually I did marry. To a woman. I was 18 when I met her sixteen years ago. We were the last two women in a lesbian club that I'd snuck into in order to explore my potential for "unnatural affections." I'd already left the church at that point but I hadn't left my God. For some reason, despite all of my supposed "unholy efforts," the same God that spoke through me in tongues of angels, eased all my teenage angst and held me "pre coming out," continued to do all those things "post coming out." So I followed my God and my heart and married the woman who is now my partner in ministry and life. We married first in my church, then again in 2010 in DC so we could take pictures outside the White House brandishing our certificate and making the case for federally legalized same sex marriage. Will we marry a third time in New York now that it's legal in our home state? Don't know yet. But if I can get another ring out of the deal, chances are I'll be making sure it happens.

In the meanwhile, there are other marriages to be performed; other duties to be carried out. Into a culture that is alternately jaded with the concept of God, frustrated with the Christian faith's inability to live up to its own ideals or disgusted with the judgmental attitudes of the faith's adherents, step I to do the work of a servant. Claiming to be called by God and to possess gifts that will undoubtedly help one make sense of one's life and the role of God in it, I take up a mantle passed down for over 2,000 years. As a minister "coming of age" in the time of state-legalized gay marriage, I am grateful for the work of open-and-affirming clergy who've gone before me and made this victory possible. Still I hope that one day I won't be looked upon as a "lesbian minister" who can perform "gay marriages." I pray I'll just be a child of God qualified to help solemnize that special moment when two become one and life, as a result, becomes all the more rich.

But until then, one of the most important things I can do to help make our marriages all the more valid is to help make sure our marriages last. My biggest fear is that the rush to church and city hall will be all too quickly followed by the rush to the divorce courts. So many conservatives expressed fear that our marriages would somehow destroy the sanctity of the ceremony. My hope is that every vow entered into by LGBT couples in New York will put another nail in the coffin of that myth. I want our marriages to be examples of love and commitment - thoughtful covenants between mortals and the divine. Because God knows, "it is not good for man to be alone."

So, suffer this newly minted minister who married the same person twice and has remained married to her for nearly a decade to offer a few quick tips to those about to take the marital plunge:

Marriage should not be entered into until you are certain you can live with all the characteristics about your partner that you know you cannot change. If you can't learn to love those things - you aren't loving the whole person.

Make sure you and your partner aren't tripping over baggage from your past. Consult your faith leaders and get counseling.

Don't look for someone to love you if you have not yet learned to love yourself - you just may attract an abuser.

Make sure you both understand what you want out of the relationship and where you want it to go. If you want five kids and your partner wants none - that's gonna be a big deal!

Finally, you deserve the best, and the best is out there. Don't settle for less.

Commitment is something our God takes very seriously. He never left me, even when I switched from long skirts to pants and from the pews to pulpit ministry. When you give your life to Christ, you become engaged to Him in a relationship that lasts for eternity. God doesn't expect His children to marry themselves off to someone on a whim and then leave them. The twain become "one flesh." "What God has joined together let no man put asunder. " The world is watching - so let's do it right!

Why Being Gay Is Okay

Christianity was intended to be a safe space for "whosoever believes in Him." Unfortunately too many humans have attempted to make it an "exclusive club" for the straight, the beautiful and/or the physically perfect. The results have turned God's safe space into a judgment zone. In its most tragic manifestation, people of various walks of life have been driven to despair, disillusionment and even suicide. Here's an attempt to undo a little of the damage. This article uses scriptural proofs in a fun way to enumerate God's love for the LGBT community, and by extrapolation, for us all. Let's open our minds and entertain the concept of a God who asks simply that we love Him above all else, and love our neighbor just as we love ourselves.

Here are the Top 10 ways We Know God Loves Gay People (with Bible Scriptures!)

10 - God and Gay both start with a "G".

9 - God knew we would be gay before we were born - and He made us anyway. - (Jeremiah 1:5; Isaiah 49:1; Romans 8:28-31). He let LGBT people write some of His favorite Gospel songs, direct some of His favorite choirs and called many to television and megachurch ministries.

8 - LBGT = Loved By God Truly!

7 - He structured salvation such that every man who wants to be a Christian must learn to love a man named Jesus. - (John 14:23).

6 - Jesus never said anything against homosexuality and He approved gender reassignment surgery. - (Matthew 19:12)

5 - God uses rainbows in the sky to show his love and covenant of peace with humanity. - (Genesis 9:13) There's even a rainbow around His throne. - (Revelations 4:3)

4 - He published David and Jonathan's tragic love story in His best-seller, the Bible. - (1 Samuel 18:1-4; 1 Samuel 20:40-42; 2 Samuel 1:25-27)

3 - In the Beginning, all humans were created intersex. - (Genesis 1:27; Genesis 2:21-23)

2 - He designed a FABulous wedding in the Holy City of New Jerusalem and invited all his children (male, female and intersex) to come dressed in a gorgeous bridal gown. - (Revelations 19:5-9; Revelations 21:9-11)

1 - And the top way we know God loves gay people? God IS LOVE. - (I John 4:16; John 3:16)

Gay Christian - New Bible Evidence Says Ok to Be Gay

The New Testament in the original Greek does not speak against Gay, Lesbian, Bi or Transgender people. Yes, many Christians believe it does, but then again many people believe there were three wise men who visited Jesus as a baby and gave him three gifts. Just look at all the nativity scenes! Yet no Bible version states there were 3 wise men, or that they visited Jesus as baby, or that there were 3 gifts. Rather, all Bible versions state there were three types of gifts, and do not mention the number of "wise men" who did in fact travel in large groups with cavalry for protection. All Bible versions state that they visited Jesus in a house, and history tells us that Jesus was just under two years old at the time.

When the Bible was first translated from the original languages into English in 1537, the knowledge of Greek word meaning was quite limited. There was no real advance until the early 1900s, but the significant advances in Greek word meaning came after 1976. The meaning of numerous words which appeared in the New Testament then became known for the first time. This information was published in scholarly academic secular journals but has not yet made its way significantly into lexicons (dictionaries). The major documentary lexicon project on New Testament words is still many years from completion. Bible translators have had to rely on outdated lexicons for their word meanings.

There is in fact no textual basis in the Bible for the exclusion of same sex relations. People who quote Bible passages which appear to be against gay people are quoting English mistranslations of the original languages- the Bible was not written in English.

Context has also been ignored. It was common belief of the time (and spoken of in the book of Jude) that Sodom was destroyed as certain angels disobeyed God in coming to earth and having sex with human women. Those Biblical passages said to be against gay and lesbian people were actually not even about relationships between humans at all: rather, they were about relationships between humans and angels.

Gay and Christian? It's OK - Why Sodom Really Was Destroyed

These days it is commonly alleged that Sodom was destroyed for homosexuality, but the Bible in the original languages, as well as other literature of the times, states that the reason was the sexual union of disobedient angels (referred to as "The Watchers") with humans.

Jude states that certain angels rebelled against God's ordinances by "whoring after" human women, and as a consequence God sent down other angels with specific instructions to punish "The Watchers." Jude states, "just like these," Sodom and Gomorrah went after strange flesh (the union of angels with human women). The Testament of Naphtali 3.3.4-5 also states that the women of Sodom had sex with angels.

2 Enoch states that the people of Sodom committed abominable acts, child-corruption, magic-making, enchantments and devilish witchcraft. The Church Father Irenaeus stated, "And wickedness very long-continued and widespread pervaded all the races of men, until very little seed of justice was in them. For unlawful unions came about on earth, as angels linked themselves with offspring of the daughters of men, who bore to them sons, who on account of their exceeding great were called Giants. The angels, then, brought to their wives as gifts teachings of evil, for they taught them the virtues of roots and herbs, and dyeing and cosmetics and discoveries of precious materials, love-philtes, hatreds, amours, passions, constraints of love, the bonds of witchcraft, every sorcery and idolatry, hateful to God; and when this was come into the world, the affairs of wickedness were propagated to overflowing, and those of justice dwindled to very little."

The 2nd c. theologian Tatian, 2 Apology 5, stated, "God committed the care of people and of everything under heaven to angels whom he appointed over them. But the angels disobeyed this appointment, and were captivated by the love of women, and produced children who are those who are called demons; and not only that, they later subdued the human race for themselves, partly by magical writings, and partly by fears and the punishments they induced, and partly by teaching them to offer sacrifices, incense, and libations, as it was these things they stood in need after they were enslaved by lustful passions. And among humanity they sowed murders, wars, adulteries, immoderate deeds, and all wickedness."

Clement of Alexandria, Miscellanies 5.1.10 stated, "To this also we shall add, that the angels who had obtained the superior rank, having sunk into pleasures, told the women the secrets which had come to their knowledge."

Jude mentions "going after a different flesh", and punishment of angels. Jude quotes 1 Enoch 1:9 in verses 14-15. 1 Enoch 6-10 states that 200 angels (The Watchers) came to earth, lusted after human women causing "defilement" and producing progeny. 1 Enoch states that the Watchers taught to humans, among other things, sorceries, enchantments, and the binding of enchantments. Tertullian, Women, 1.2 stated that angels fell through lust for women and referred to their progeny as a "more wicked demon-brood".

The Testament of Naphtali 3.3.4-5 states that the women of Sodom had sex with angels. It states, "In like manner also the Watchers changed the order of their nature, whom also the Lord cursed at the flood, and for their sakes made desolate the earth, that it should be uninhabited and fruitless." Note the term "changed the order of their nature" which is similar to Jude's term, "went after different flesh" and to Paul's statement, "for the females exchanged natural sex for what is other than nature. And the same goes for males too," in Romans 1:26. These days this is generally wrongly assumed to be referring to homosexuality, but was in fact referring to the union of angels with humans, for which precisely Sodom was destroyed.

Gay Christian is OK - Romans Chapter 1 is Not a Clobber Passage

Romans Chapter 1 (specifically verses 26-32) is often held up as a gay Christian "clobber passage", that is, evidence that God hates homosexuality and that someone cannot be Christian and gay. However, this passage was not about homosexuality at all.

What was it about? Let's look at the context. Paul (the writer of Romans) starts of by saying that when we look at creation, we can see God in it, but that certain ones didn't praise God for this or even thank him. He says they worshipped idols instead. In verse 24, Paul says "for this reason" God handed them over to ritual uncleanness. Now the clincher. In verse 26, Paul states that the females exchanged natural sex for what is "other than nature". In the next verse, he says the same goes for males too. In following passages, Paul gives a list of their wrongdoings.

In the passage Paul follows Jewish literature in speaking of idolatry and people who did not acknowledge God, and both women and men who went against nature due to their own burning passions. This has been thought to refer to homosexuality, but it is not even about the union of humans, same sex or not. The Aphrocryphal literature well documents certain angels (known as "The Watchers") as going "against nature" and "whoring after" humans. In Romans 1 verses 28-32, Paul gives list of their wicked deeds, and this list can be found also in 2 Enoch 10. The context in 2 Enoch 10 was also about those who did not know their creator but worshipped idols, and about angels who lusted after humans.

The ancient Jewish Testament of Naphtali 3.3.4-5 likewise states that the women of Sodom had sex with angels, and that in doing so The Watchers had "changed the order of their nature". Sound familiar?

Ancient Jewish literature had several accounts of angels ("The Watchers") coming to earth and "whoring after" humans. This was described as "going against nature". In these accounts, it is mentioned that they did not worship the creator but made idols instead. There are also lists of their wicked deeds. This is precisely what we find in Romans 10. 'Religious' Christians in Western cultures in the last few centuries have seen homosexuality as a sin, so have read their own personal beliefs back into the original words of the Bible when they are in fact not there at all. Many Christians did not and do not realize that there was a strong Jewish tradition of angels coming to earth, changing their nature, and lusting after humans.

Romans 10 is not about homosexuality, but about the union of angels with humans.

Wondering Which Way Is Right?

Have you ever wondered which way is right? Whenever confronted with two or more options, do you know which option to choose?

It is very common for most to question what to do in any given situation. Should we follow our feelings? Should we seek other's opinions? Should we research or Google for answers? Or do we pray and hope for the best? What exactly is the right way to figure out what's right?

Most of us are confronted with concerns often. Whether dealing with relationships, finances, health, or even ourselves. When we consider how often we must make right decisions, it's no wonder we can often make wrong ones.

In order to determine the right way in any given situation, we need to begin by identifying the desired result. To have happy relationships, the right thing to do is what most would consider wrong. That is, to provide for the other's needs above and beyond our own. Sound difficult, or even impossible? That may be why so many struggle with doing what's right, because we're often compelled to do what's wrong. Taking care of our own needs seems right, but can be selfish; taking care of another's needs seems considerate, but is necessary. If each vows to care for the other, our own needs will be met; consequently, the relationship will strengthen.

Our finances can be a challenge. If we follow our feelings we can often overspend. If we don't have a clear goal, we can often miss the mark. If we want our finances to be in order, we need to establish a goal so we can meet it. Then we need to do what's right and stick to the plan, even when we don't feel like it. Our health follows the same pattern.

So what about day-to-day decisions? When someone makes us angry, should we retaliate? If someone is hurtful, should we remark? If we've been treated unfairly, should we speak up? There is a way to handle each circumstance in a right way. The answer is this: Respond out of love, with no hurtful intent. The only way to disengage a negative situation is to consider the source, consider the situation, and consider the reason. Remembering, if the offense comes from a loved one, chances are they are justified; simply consider your portion of blame, apologize, and do better next time. Yet, if the offense arises from a stranger, refrain from rude comments, instead be kind back - after all, yours may be the only smile they receive all day. Many find this difficult to do because they fear judgment, or degradation. Truth is, if our intention is right, our outcome will usually be also.

Doing what's right isn't hard to understand, although it may be difficult to do. But as with anything worthwhile, practice makes perfect!

Are You Too Broke NOT To Give?

If you re-read the heading and immediately thought "How can I give if I'm broke!" this article should enlighten you to a truth, which can get you out of debt and keep you out.

Most people believe being in debt is a spending problem. When speaking to financial advisors or specialists, they will typically equate it as such. But what if it's more than just a spending problem; what if it's a giving problem?

If you've been following along with these articles and newsletters, you no doubt realize there is an ultimate truth about everything that affects our life, and that truth oftentimes makes a lot of sense to us, but sometimes it seems contradictory.

Truth is there are two principles to managing money. One principle is: If we want to have money, we need to save it; not spend it (easy enough to understand). However, a second principle is: If we want to receive money, we need to first be willing to give some away (far more difficult to grasp).

Most of us have experienced living paycheck-to-paycheck and struggling with not having enough. As such, we are tempted to hold onto what little we have and make it stretch as far as possible.

This second money principle is one most commonly known by those who are wealthy; more surprisingly, oftentimes while on their way to becoming wealthy-some of which understood this principle from the beginning, while others did not. Regardless of their understanding, those who give graciously to charity, good causes and to help those less fortunate, often reap benefits of great financial gain. The point to remember here is the willingness to give graciously, not begrudgingly. Which could be the difference between successfully initiating this second principle or not.

Consider what Donald Trump states about his mother, "She always had time to give to charity and needy causes, so her interests were diverse, yet well balanced. I like to think mine are too, and I'm quite a giver in many cases."1 Even Robert Kiyosaki, author and founder of Rich Dad, Poor Dad suggests to give 10%, save 10%, invest 10% and live off the rest.

So now that you are aware of a truth that many wealthy people follow, are you going to continue to believe you are too broke to give? Even if you earn just a little, are you too broke not to initiate this money principle? The choice is up to you. If it works for Donald Trump, Robert Kiyosaki, Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey, why wouldn't it work for you?

Remember, truth stands, regardless of people's opinion or understanding. It takes faith to believe and even more faith to do. Truth is: Give and you shall receive.

Why God Doesn't Answer Prayers

Many of us lack understanding when it comes to whom or what God truly is. Some believe He is a huge being who lives in the clouds. Some believe He is vengeful and will strike us down with wrath if we do something wrong. Others believe He is a spirit that lives within everything and everyone, resulting in everything also becoming gods expressed throughout nature in trees, babbling brooks, rocks and animals.

Truth is, God is a Spirit and His presence is known throughout all creation, including nature, but not to be mistaken with His Spirit being present in all things. There is only one place He has breathed His Spirit and that is within mankind - man and woman.

To better understand about prayer and its power and purpose, we need to first understand how God brought that power to mankind initially.

There was no doubt a big bang when God created the heavens and earth, separating land and water by speaking them into existence. God then formed Adam in His own image by breathing life into him, causing him to become another speaking spirit, with free will, and the same spiritual power to create things into existence by speaking words. He then created Eve and the beautiful Garden of Eden filled with all to meet their needs, so they could enjoy life to the full, in peace, without worry, concern or toiling for a living (sounds like a vacation paradise doesn't it).

Through prayer, which is communication with God, Adam and Eve enjoyed a relationship with God, and were given power and authority over all things including trees, babbling brooks, rocks and animals, because He did not put His Spirit into those things-only into mankind.

Then God gave them a test, allowing them to eat from all trees in The Garden except one, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This was a test of obedience, but Adam and Eve chose by their free will not to obey; choosing instead to make their own decisions, believing they knew what was best for them and doing what they wanted to do. Sounds familiar?

Essentially, they failed the test. They were letting God know, "We don't care what You want; we want to do things our own way and determine for ourselves what is good and evil." That's when they lost the power of prayer they had been granted and God banished them out of the Garden of Eden to fend for themselves. Since then, mankind has followed in Adam and Eve's footsteps, and has been plagued with struggles, worry, anxiety, stress, toiling and working hard for a living.

Yet that desire to live a vacation paradise has remained within each of us - to find the peace we innately desire, which God implanted within us in order to bring us back into relationship with Him; so we can live a good life of happiness, hope, prosperity and rest, and have all our needs met so we can enjoy life.

Truth is, only God can restore that life of paradise back to us. He offered a good life to Adam and Eve, but they declined it through their choice of disobedience. Now He is offering it to each of us. It is our personal free will choice to accept or decline. If we accept, a new dynamic exists and our prayers are heard and answered!

What is the Truth Revealed? Prayer has power and is communication with God.
