Are There Restrictions On 'Free Will'?

If you believe you have 'free will' to live your life however you choose, you are correct. Then why do some of us experience a messed up life, while simply exercising our free will? This being the case, it does not seem very free, does it?

Truth is, choosing to exercise our free will in the way it was not intended, can cause our life to mess up. How is that possible, you might ask? For the same reason we cannot drink vodka or water in equal measure-one will destroy our life, the other will save it. Yet the option to choose which to drink is our own free will choice.

To receive greater understanding about free will, ask yourself these questions:
  • According to the way you understand free will, what would be the ultimate intention or purpose of having it in the first place?
  • How much of this free will do you believe you actually have?
  • Are there any restrictions on free will?
  • If there are restrictions, then how could it be considered 'free will' in the freest sense of the word?
If you are like most, you're probably still pondering these questions, but I will continue asking!

If each and every one of us has been given this free will in order to live our lives any way we choose to, then wouldn't there also be some provision included so we would not be stopped or hindered by laws, or be in conflict with the free will of other people? Wouldn't there be a simple, straightforward way to ensure that everybody, everywhere, all at the same time, would be able to follow their own free will and still have the world run smoothly? After all, if this was really the full intention of free will, then why should any one of us expect anything less than a perfect world run by everybody's personal free will, acting out any time, any place, anywhere?

"Shouldn't we expect that it would come to us without any repercussions? After all, if there are repercussions, wouldn't that negate the very concept and premise of free will? Shouldn't this free will we have allow us to do anything we want to do; for example: to rob a bank, jump off a tall building, or even to kill someone? If we do in fact have free will to live our lives any way we choose, then shouldn't we expect free will to have no conditions? Shouldn't our free will supersede any restrictions, even of laws-whether man-made or natural?"

If these questions have you wondering what free will truly is for, the answer may surprise you in its simplicity. The answer is this: We have not been given free will to do what we want, whenever we want, with whomever we want; rather, we have been given free will to make the right choices in life, instead of the wrong ones (although we have the free will to choose wrongly).

Could the purpose and intent for free will truly be about making right choices? Seems too simple to be true? Oftentimes, the simple truth is exactly that - simple. As for believing whether free will is truly for this purpose, you have the free will choice to believe it is, or not. Yet those who believe and exercise their free will to make right choices generally succeed and reap great benefits in life; whereas, those who choose wrongly generally experience vast negative consequences.

Still, the free will choice is yours to make.

The Message (MSG) John 3:16-18
16-18"This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person's failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.
