Many think being humble is humiliating and a weakness. Same goes
for being meek. Is this what you believe? Truth is being genuinely
humble takes a great deal of strength - both in what we do and don't do.
Yet being proud often takes no effort at all. Being prideful is
actually the opposite of being humble.
Being rightly humble and meek means doing what's right, even when we don't want to. It means being patient, kind, forgiving and loving - even to those who don't deserve it!
Being prideful is choosing to do things our own way; rather than the right way - it's following our feelings and expecting others to accept them. Whereas, being humble is choosing to do things the right way; rather than our own way - it's controlling our feelings and being considerate of others.
Sound too challenging? It can be. But consider for a moment what's in it for you. By practicing humility and meekness, you become someone of better character. Consider how these traits could help you in your own life. How about with your current significant other or future hopeful? What about in relationship with your sibling, parent, family member or even boss? Could any of them use your patience, kindness, forgiveness and unconditional love?
Yet, be aware of those who exhibit false humility. That might actually be someone who hangs their head down low appearing unworthy, yet grumbles beneath their breath. This is not righteous humility; nor is it an exercise in abstaining from speaking their mind about a certain issue, since most who practice false humility have the full intention of expressing their anger or displeasure sometime in the future.
No, correct humility and meekness is resolving to deal with whatever situation arises properly; choosing not to exercise our freedom to act out on our own anger or displeasure, but choosing instead to forgive, be loving and kind. This takes a great deal of power and strength, thus is the sign of someone who is truly strong. Who chooses to control their feelings; rather than be subjected to them - one willing to give, rather than to take. Of these two character traits, who would you rather become or have in your life? Someone willing to be meek and humble, or someone who is proud? Most would choose meek and humble - wouldn't you agree?
So the next time someone is challenging you, remember the power of humility. Who knows, choosing to practice humility and meekness towards others, might even help others become that way towards you too!
